Created and curated by Marlina Gonzalez
For: Togonon Gallery (San Francisco)
"Instructions For Peace" is a public art and gallery exhibition of new media installations and sculptural time capsules containing people’s instructions for peace in the 21st century. The exhibition will take place at Togonon Gallery in San Francisco from September 7-30, 2010 with an opening reception on Saturday, September 11, 2010. It is one of the parallel events to the 3rd 01SJ Bienniale in response to the theme “Build Your Own World.” Selected time capsules will also be exhibited on September 17 at the 01SJ Bienniale’s “Absolute Zero Evening” in San Jose, CA.
Participating artists include: California-based artists Steve Baibak, Allen Guilmette, Xuchi Naungayan-Eggleton with Josh Eggleton; Arizona-based Pima Indian mixed media artist Richard Bluecloud Castaneda; New York-based public artist Anita Glesta and new media artist Fang Yu-Lin; and Texas-based visual artist Roberto Rivera. Instructions for Peace is conceived and curated by Minneapolis-based new media arts curator Marlina Gonzalez.
The installations will integrate
raw material and digital technology as literal vehicles for people’s
aspirations for peace. Artists will use raw materials and construction
scraps collected from the World Trade Center construction site as well
as lumber donated by one of the WTC lumber contractors, U.S. Lumber.
They will draw inspiration, shape a response or interpret people’s
entries in the Instructions For Peace blog which will
go live in the Spring 2010 (www.instructionsforpeace.org)
Selected sculptural installation/s will be interactive kiosks that visitors are invited to enter and participate by blogging, v-logging, uploading photos or sketches that shape their brief Instructions For Peace to the world. Each instruction can be addressed to future world leaders, parents and grandparents, youth, communities, religious institutions, etc. Instructions can be pure text or may include video uploads, photos, sketches, poetry or other literary forms, sketches.
The Instructions For Peace installations, time capsules, and blog will be physical and virtual places where people of all ages, languages, cultures, can represent their desires, statements, reflections, hopes about global peace, post 9/11.
